Description

LARGE ANTIQUE CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF AN EARLY RYE GIN MILL IN WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
WHERE GIN WAS MADE IN WESTFIELD MASS. LONG YEARS AGO.
Photo by Coleman. Westfield, MA: circa 1880.
Captioned and signed by the photographer. The photograph depicts farmland, barns and buildings that were the original home of the G. H. Bush Grist Mill & Distillery Company, on the corner of Notre Dame and No. Elm Street. THE G. H. Bush & Company (Rye Gin) Distillery is listed in several business registries from the time. The white house on the right occupies land that is now 260 North Elm Street, Westfield, MA (Sterling Radiator Co.). Original cabinet card photograph, diptych photograph, visible images measures 23 by 9 inches (2 separate photographs, mounted on photographer's board), titled and signed by the photographer. Matted and framed in original wood & glass frame (total measurements 18 by 32). Apparently the small white building in the left image was the gin distillery (there's a sign on the building, but it's not legible).
Generally the photograph and original frame are in good condition, with
some wear, with tiny crack to mount in lower margin, 2 tiny snagged tears to right image. I took the photograph out to examine it thoroughly, and replaced the cardboard backing (which had all but disintegrated).
An interesting piece of photographica, Westfield, Mass., and early alcohol distillery history.
It's a large framed photograph, and is going to need careful packing, hence the shipping fee (I'll refund any excess shipping, depending on your location).
