Authentic Original Antique 1895Cabinet Card Photograph of Durango Wheel Club @ Baker's Bridge by Frank Gonner, Durango Colorado Bicycle Club. This is an original antique photograph, NOT the reproduction that you see so often. The photo has some chipping on the edges and the mount has one small stain. The photo is 4" x 6" on a mount that measures 6 7/8" x 5 3/8". On the back someone wrote: Baker's Bridge, Durango Bicycle Club June 16, 1895, Gonner the photographer. On the mount is says: An Old Landmark. Marked in the negative it says: Durango Wheel Club 6-16-95 at Baker's Bridge, Gonner Foto. It's that amazing image of Victorian men & women, some with bicycles, some without, posing on Baker's Bridge & below the bridge on the rocks. The Animas River is roaring like it used to! One of the men on the rocks in the center is holding his bicycle out over the water. The old timber bridge is made out of log stringers & lumber planks.
Frank Xavier Gonner (1860-1912) was a Luxemborg-American photographer from Durango, Colorado. During his 23 year long career, capturing images of people & places, he produced a historical record of the Durango community. He also took many photographs of the Ute Indians in Ignacio & attended the St. Louis World's Fair to view his displayed photos. One such photograph is "Cavalry remnant of Meeker Massacre" taken in 1903 and currently owned by the Library of Congress. This is an important Durango Colorado photograph showing where our bicycle mania began! A must-have cabinet card for any Durango image collector.....or bicycle enthusiast. A perfect addition to any Southwestern photo collection. Why buy a reproduction when you can have the real thing?
