Description
From the defeat of the Spanish Armada to the Second World War, Britain's Royal Navy "ruled the waves" for 400 years. British Royal Navy "jack tars" (sailors) of the late 1800s needed well crafted pocket knives for performing their duties aboard ship. Their "jack knife" carried a sheepsfoot blade for safely cutting rope and a stout "marlin spike" for tying and untying knots in the rigging. These folders were often made by the finest cutlers of Sheffield. This Antique British Royal Navy T. TURNER STAG HANDLE MARLIN SPIKE RIGGING KNIFE is in good condition, with some rounding to the main blade tip, some sharpening to the main blade edge, two very small chips in the bottom main blade edge, some scattered scratching, pitting, and patina to the main blade, some cleaning and pitting to the marlin spike and the bolsters, a hairline crack in the lower middle left handle scale around the rivet, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the knife is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 3 1/4" sheepsfoot main blade, sports incredible mellow genuine stag handle scales with gorgeous natural darkening and stippling, and is stamped at the ricasso of the main blade with its maker, the famous "ENCORE / T. TURNER & CO / BEST STEEL". It dates to the ca. 1880s, boasts a sturdy marlin spike and a thick brass hanging bale at bottom, and is a hefty piece, measuring nearly 5" long overall closed. A fine example of a very rare, original Antique British Royal Navy T. TURNER STAG HANDLE MARLIN SPIKE RIGGING KNIFE. No case included.
