Description
Canadian Pacific Line - A 5" diameter bowl from the First Class service aboard the ill-fated EMPRESS OF IRELAND. The ship sank in just fourteen minutes with a heavy loss of life after colliding with a collier in 1914.The bowl was once silverplated although that has worn off during decades under the St. Lawrence. You can just make out the Canadian Pacific logo etched onto one side. On the bottom it is marked Mappin & Webb. I can just make out the date code (an old English "K" in a shield) which indicates 1911.
The bowl was recovered by the late wreck diver Bart Malone (1946-2017). Bart was an avid collector and famously said, "I dive wrecks for the purpose of restoring artifacts. I'm not a sightseer."
I visited his house/museum in New Jersey several times and was always amazed at his large collection of wreck artifacts. Bart had a larger-than-life personality. He passed away while doing what he loved best, diving on a wreck.
Good condition (for coming from a wreck) with wear from being under the St. Lawrence for decades.
