Two U.S. Marines of the

Marine Div. advance
on Wana Ridge.  The Marine in the left foreground spots the enemy, takes aim with his
Thompson submachine gun
, and fires a burst … May 18, 1945, during the
Battle of Okinawa

OF NEW RECRUITS OF THE >
2
nd
BATTALION, 1st MARINES FROM THE RECRUITING
AND INDUCTION THRU TRAINING.
IT’S A PHOTOGRAPHIC REVIEW/STORY WITH SMALL CAPTIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH PHOTO ..
A LOT OF THE CAPTIONS ARE DIFFICULT TO READ,
BUT YOU GET THE GENERAL IDEA OF A CLASS OF YOUNG RECRUITS JOURNEY THRU THEIR SUMMER TRAINING, IN THIS PICTORIAL REVIEW.
(STAPLED PAMPHLET)
(FRONT COVER & HEADING)
(PREFACE PAGE)
(9 PAGES – PHOTOS WITH CAPTIONS)
(REAR COVER PAGE – BLANK)
(PAMPHLET IS > 9” INCHES X 12 ½” INCHES)

SO THE FOLD IS NOT SO BAD NOW.

WITH A FEW LITTLE SMUDGES & TINY MARKS ONLY.
RED COLOR GRAPHICS REMAIN IN GREAT CONDITION.
MANILLA PAGES HAVE AGED SLIGHTLY WITH
THE YELLOWING TINGE OF TIME, VERY MINOR..
COVER & PAGES HAVE A FEW MINISCULE EDGE TEARS
HERE & THERE .. NOTHING TO REALLY SPEAK OFF.
PAMPHLET REMAINS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.
INNER PHOTO PAGES REMAIN IN VERY GOOD SHAPE.
REAR COVER HAS A FEW SMALL SMUDGES,
COLOR TINGE FROM STORAGE & ONE SMALL
EDGE FOLD FROM YEARS IN A FOOTLOCKER.
ADDITIONAL WWII ERA MARINE PHOTOS AND VINTAGE RECRUITING POSTER PHOTO ARE SHOWN FOR HISTORICAL REFERENCE & ARE NOT PART OF THE "PICTORIAL REVIEW" PAMPHLET.
IT’S ACTUALLY KIND OF RARE AND JUST A NEAT PIECE
OF HISTORY FROM A MARINE VETERAN’S ESTATE.
VETERANS OF THE 2
nd
BATTALION RECEIVED THIS
PICTORIAL REVIEW, FREE, AS A GIFT FROM
THE MARINE CORPS. WHO MADE ARRANGEMENTS
FOR COPIES TO BE SENT TO
ALL PAST UNIT MEMBERS.
WITH THE STANDARD (4-6 YEAR ENLISTMENT) AND
FOR THOSE MARINES WHO CHOSE TO REMAIN IN
THE CORPS. AS THEIR CAREER, AND SO MANY HAVE,
THIS VERY CLASS OF YOUNG RECRUITS PICTURED IN THIS PICTORIAL REVIEW WOULD HAVE BEEN THE
FIRST TO SCALE THE LADDERS AT ‘INCHON” IN
“OPERATION CHROMITE”
SEPT. 15, 1950.
MY GRANDFATHER DIED 26 YEARS AGO AND WE
HAVE BEEN SLOWLY SELLING STUFF OFF.
IT’S A NICE LITTLE COLLECTIBLE TO ADD TO YOUR U.S.M.C. COLLECTION, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE
VETERAN’S & COLLECTORS WHO HAVE A CONNECTION
TO THE
2
nd
BATTALION, 1
st
MARINE DIVISION.

TRAINED AS A 30 CAL. MACHINE GUNNER.
AS A MACHINE GUNNER ATTACHED TO A RIFLE COMPANY.
HE FOUGHT AT GUADALCANAL, PELELIU, & OKINAWA, AND
SURVIVED THE WAR.  MY GRANDFATHER TOLD US HE WAS
FRIENDS WITH JOHN BASILONE, ALSO A MACHINE, WHO WON
THE MEDAL OF HONOR FOR HEROISM DURING THE BATTLE
OF GUADALCANAL.  AFTER THE JAPANESE SURRENDER
SOME 1

MARINE DIV.’s AND SENT TO JAPAN FOR OCCUPATIONAL DUTY, WHERE MY GRANDFATHER’S UNIT WAS STATIONED IN YOKOSUKA NEAR TOKYO FROM SEPT. 1945 TO FEB. 1946, AND THEN HE WAS SENT HOME & DISCHARGED.
“MY GRANDFATHER TOLD US SOME AMAZING STORIES ABOUT
THE FIGHTING ON GAUDALCANAL & THE HORRIBLE FIGHTING
HIS UNIT SAW DURING THE ASSAULT ON THE SHURI LINE,
DURING THE BATTLE OF OKINAWA.  HE SAID HIS
UNIT CAME UP AGAINST A DETACHMENT OF (IJM)
IMPERIAL JAPANESE MARINES THAT WERE PART OF A LAST
MINUTE LANDING FORCE THAT WAS ASSIGNED TO DEFENSIVE
DUTY ALONG THE SHURI LINE.  HE SAID THEY FOUGHT
TO THE DEATH & CASULTIES WERE VERY HIGH IN HIS UNIT.
HE WAS MADE ACTING SGT. WHEN HIS COMPANY
SGT. WAS KILLED.
